Robert Francis Prevost, elected as Pope Leo XIV on May 8, 2025, is the first American and Augustinian pontiff in the history of the Catholic Church. Born in Chicago and naturalized as a Peruvian citizen, his path has been marked by missionary work in Peru, key leadership roles in the Vatican, and a pastoral vision centered on social justice, synodality, and inclusion.
Early Life and Academic Background
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost was raised in a devout Catholic family. His father, Louis Marius Prevost, was of French and Italian descent, while his mother, Mildred Martínez, had Spanish heritage. Growing up in Dolton, a suburb of Chicago, Prevost was actively involved in his local parish, serving as an altar boy and participating in the church choir. He attended St. Augustine Seminary High School in Holland, Michigan, where he excelled academically and held leadership roles, including editor-in-chief of the yearbook and secretary of the student council.
Prevost pursued higher education at Villanova University, an Augustinian institution, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1977. He furthered his theological studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, obtaining a Master of Divinity in 1982. Committed to deepening his understanding of canon law, he earned both a Licentiate and Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
Religious Vocation and Missionary Work in Peru
In 1977, Prevost entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Augustine, making his solemn profession in 1981. Ordained as a priest in 1982, he was soon assigned to missionary work in Peru. From 1985 onward, he served in various capacities, including as chancellor of the Territorial Prelature of Chulucanas and as director of formation in Trujillo. His dedication to pastoral care and education significantly impacted the communities he served.
Prevost’s commitment to Peru extended beyond his ecclesiastical duties; he became a naturalized Peruvian citizen in 2015. His humanitarian efforts during natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic earned him the affectionate title “Saint of the North” among Peruvians.
Leadership within the Augustinian Order and Return to Peru
In 1999, Prevost was elected Prior Provincial of the Augustinian Province of Chicago. Two years later, in 2001, he was elected Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, a position he held until 2013. During his tenure, he emphasized ethical governance, education, and missionary outreach, guiding the order into the 21st century
After completing his term as Prior General, Prevost returned to Peru, where he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in 2014. He was consecrated as bishop later that year and officially became the Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015. His leadership in the diocese was marked by pastoral sensitivity and administrative acumen.
Service in the Vatican
In 2023, Pope Francis appointed Prevost as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. In these roles, he was instrumental in the selection and oversight of bishops worldwide, implementing reforms that included greater involvement of women in the selection process . His work reflected a commitment to transparency and inclusivity within the Church’s hierarchy.
Election as Pope Leo XIV
On May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis, Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Leo XIV. His election marked a historic moment as he became the first American and the first Augustinian to ascend to the papacy. In his inaugural address, Pope Leo XIV emphasized themes of peace, inclusion, and environmental stewardship, signaling a continuation of his predecessor’s pastoral priorities .
Pastoral Approach and Key Priorities
Pope Leo XIV is known for his moderate and compassionate approach to leadership. He advocates for a synodal Church that listens to and engages with the faithful, emphasizing the importance of social justice, care for the environment, and support for migrants and refugees. His commitment to these issues aligns with his previous work in Peru and his roles within the Vatican.
In his first public statements as Pope, he called for a Church that is “missionary and inclusive,” reflecting his dedication to reaching out to marginalized communities and addressing global challenges.
Controversies and Responses
Prior to his election, Pope Leo XIV faced allegations related to the handling of sexual abuse cases during his tenure in Peru and the United States. Critics accused him of failing to adequately investigate and respond to reports of abuse. However, the Vatican and supporters, including investigative journalist Pedro Salinas, have defended his actions, stating that he followed appropriate procedures and was a strong ally of abuse victims .
Salinas noted that Prevost played a crucial role in the Vatican’s investigation into the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, a Peruvian religious community accused of widespread abuse, which ultimately led to its dissolution in January 2025 .
While these controversies have drawn attention, many within the Church view Pope Leo XIV’s overall record as one of integrity and dedication to reform.
