Mariano Wechsler: the engineer who set out to teach an entire country how to code

He taught programming for twenty-seven years, long before the word “edtech” became common in Argentina. He later co-founded Digital House, one of the schools that trained the largest number of people in digital skills across the region, built a software company, created a platform for developing technology teams and eventually joined the board of a bank.

Mariano Wechsler describes himself as a nerd with a passion for technology. For decades, he has repeated the same idea: everyone should learn how to code. This profile traces that career, the figures behind it and the debates raised by his proposal.

Twenty-seven years in front of a classroom

Before any investment round, there was a classroom.

Wechsler graduated from the National Technological University with a degree in Information Systems Engineering and taught programming at ORT Argentina for twenty-seven years. He later joined the institution’s board.

That detail explains much of what followed in his career. Almost everything he created afterward took the form of a school, even when it was officially called a company.

His first major business project was Digbang, a software development company specializing in digital products. There he worked on the other side of the problem: organizations needed to build new services but often lacked both the technical talent and the internal culture required to do so.

Digital House: From eighty students to six figures

In 2015, Wechsler co-founded Digital House with Nelson Duboscq and Eduardo Akhzar. The original idea was to train technology professionals through intensive, practical programs connected with the needs of the labor market.

The first class consisted of eighty students. Seven years later, the school was receiving approximately 30,000 students annually and had trained more than 130,000 people through its different programs across Latin America.

The project attracted the attention of major technology companies and investment funds.

In 2021, Digital House raised more than US$50 million in a financing round that had an unusual feature: the investors included two Argentine technology companies, Mercado Libre and Globant, alongside Riverwood Capital and Kaszek.

The operation brought the company’s accumulated financing to more than US$80 million.

One of the programs created through that alliance was Certified Tech Developer, designed to train software developers according to the technical and professional standards of the same companies that would later employ them.

Wechsler remains a partner in Digital House, although he has explained that he is no longer involved in its daily operations. His current institutional profiles still identify him as a co-founder of the school and a former academic director.

Teamcubation, banking and university education

Wechsler’s main executive role today is as co-founder and CEO of Teamcubation, a company created in 2021 to address the shortage of technology talent by training developers and assembling teams for large organizations.

He has also participated in university programs related to digital business and executive education. His background includes work as co-director of the Digital Business program at the University of San Andrés and involvement in initiatives focused on digital leadership and organizational transformation.

That combination of company, education and corporate transformation is consistent with his central argument.

Wechsler believes that transforming a traditional institution can be more interesting than joining a company that was already born digital. The scale of a bank, university or large corporation means that even a small improvement can affect the daily lives of millions of people.

The challenge is also greater. A startup can design its systems and culture from the beginning. An established organization must change while continuing to operate.

The river metaphor

When Wechsler explains digital transformation, he often uses an image of his own.

Humanity had been walking on solid ground when it suddenly reached a river. On the other side was unexplored territory. Some people crossed and began building there, but most of the new land remains unoccupied.

His conclusion is that society has barely begun to understand what digital technology will make possible.

The most important part of the metaphor comes next. The mistake of recent decades was not crossing the river. It was failing to help everyone else cross with us, because not everybody knows how to swim.

Wechsler refuses to describe this divide as an inevitable conflict between technological insiders and outsiders. He prefers to see it as an opportunity, accompanied by a warning: many of the skills and business models that work today will probably become obsolete.

That leads to one of his most repeated definitions: digital transformation is not fundamentally technological. It is cultural.

Technology matters, but the real change comes from putting users at the center of decisions, reorganizing teams and allowing people to experiment.

His practical conclusion is that organizations must permit mistakes. When employees are punished for every failure, they stop trying new things and begin working primarily to avoid being dismissed.

The arguments against his ideas

Wechsler’s agenda is not free from criticism, and he usually addresses those objections directly.

The first and loudest concerns employment: will artificial intelligence destroy jobs?

He does not deny the risk. Automation will replace human tasks, and some positions will disappear. He also argues that the process cannot simply be stopped because the software already runs on millions of computers around the world.

His response has two parts.

First, governments may be able to regulate the speed and conditions of adoption. Second, technology will also complement and amplify human abilities while creating occupations that did not previously exist.

He often recalls that the arrival of personal computers in the 1980s generated similar fears. His preferred example is the user-experience designer, a profession that was barely recognized a few decades ago and now employs thousands of people.

The second criticism comes from education: are intensive courses enough to transform a country’s workforce?

His answer is unusually self-critical for someone who helped build one of the region’s best-known digital schools.

He argues that institutions such as Digital House are useful, but that the number of people they reach remains small compared with the total population passing through formal education.

That is why he assigns a central responsibility to the State. Rather than spending years debating abstract reforms, public authorities should ensure that what children learn in school is genuinely useful and that digital skills are incorporated across every educational level.

The third objection concerns the darker side of the technology he promotes.

Wechsler acknowledges the negative effects of excessive screen use. His criticism is directed less at devices themselves than at business practices deliberately designed to make people feel dependent on their phones.

What he looks for when hiring

Wechsler’s ideal candidate is not someone who claims to know everything.

He looks for people who want to keep learning and who never assume that they have already reached the end of their development.

He also expects programmers to move beyond the act of writing code. They should understand the product, the customer and the problem the company is attempting to solve.

In his view, technical excellence without curiosity about the wider business produces limited professionals.

When asked which positions are most in demand, he describes an increasingly broad field that includes DevOps, cybersecurity, data science, product management and digital marketing.

The list itself reinforces his argument. The technology industry no longer needs only programmers. It needs people capable of connecting software with users, operations, strategy and communication.

Teaching people to cross

Outside work, Wechsler describes himself as a fan of science fiction and Argentine barbecue.

It is a particularly local combination for someone who has spent three decades explaining what might exist on the other side of the technological river.

His career moved between classrooms, software companies, digital schools, corporate boards and university programs, but the original idea remained intact.

Everyone should learn to code, not necessarily because everyone will become a programmer, but because programming teaches people to understand the systems increasingly shaping their work and their lives.

For Wechsler, the objective is not simply to produce more developers. It is to ensure that fewer people remain standing on the riverbank while the rest of the world moves ahead.
